HOW TO CARE FOR PETRIFIED WOOD

Petrified wood is wood that has turned to stone. When trees have been buried for many years under sediment, they can transition into stone. Although the stem tissue retains its original structure, all the organic materials are replaced with minerals. The color and shape of every piece of petrified wood are unique. There are a few basic rules for getting the most out of your petrified wood furniture and ensuring its longevity:

  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and excessive heat or dampness.
  • Never expose the furniture to pets with sharp claws or other sharp objects.
  • Use coasters and felt pads under lamp bases and accessories.

Petrified wood is very fragile, so never use chemical cleaners. Petrified wood can usually be cleaned with lukewarm water. If a cleaning product is necessary, use an extremely gentle product such as apple cider vinegar or mild hand soap. Always test the product on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Clean spills or smudges with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive brushes, scrub pads, or steel wool. For routine cleaning, use a soft jersey or microfiber cloth. Gently rub the wood with a cloth and a small amount of hand soap or vinegar. The fewer products you use on petrified wood, the better.
